What is a BIN Code?
A BIN (Bank Identification Number) represents the first 6 to 8 digits of a credit or debit card number. It is used to identify the financial institution that issued the card (the issuing bank), the payment system (such as Visa, Mastercard, Mir), the card category (debit, credit, prepaid), and the country of origin.
Instant identification of debit, credit, prepaid, and commercial card types to optimize payment flows.
Determine country of card origin. Helps mitigate fraud risks if issuer country does not match payer location.
Accurate bank name recognition (e.g. Sberbank, Chase, JPMorgan) for analytics or payment checkout personalization.
luhn_explainer
Mathematical checksum verification standard for bank card numbers.
The Luhn algorithm (developed by IBM scientist Hans Peter Luhn) is a simple checksum formula used to validate identification numbers, such as credit card numbers (Visa, Mastercard, Mir). It is not cryptographic, but protects against typos.
Step 1: Double every second digit starting from the next-to-last digit and moving left.
Step 2: If doubling results in a number greater than 9, sum its digits (e.g. 14 -> 1+4 = 5) or subtract 9.
Sum all calculated digits along with original undoubled digits. If total sum is divisible by 10, card number is valid.
