What Are ISO 8583 Decline Codes?

When a card transaction is processed via a POS terminal or web checkout, the acquirer sends an authorization request to the issuer. The issuer responds with a standardized two-character Response Code specified in ISO 8583.

Code 00 indicates authorization approval. Any other value specifies the rejection condition: lack of funds, expired card, incorrect PIN, or anti-fraud security stops.
